Ardee Bog: Past, Present, Future

Friends of Ardee Bog will be at EARTH RISING on Saturday, October 22nd.

Conversation in Studio 5: 3.30 - 5.30PM

&

Curlew Mask Making Workshop in Pavilion 3: 12 - 7PM

ARDEE BOG: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Curlew Mask Making Workshop
Time: 12 – 7pm / Location: Pavilion 3
Curious about Curlews? Is your interest peaked by their long beaks? You could once hear the Curlew in every county of Ireland, but now this beautiful bird could go extinct in Ireland within a few years. Join us for a Curlew Mask Making Workshop, learn about our work surveying these birds in Ardee Bog and become part of a flock of Curlews to take over IMMA!

You can make a Curlew mask like this, while chatting with us about Curlews!

Conversation about People, Plants & Peat (and Rights of Peatlands?)
Time: 3.30 - 5.30PM / Location: Studio 5

Curious about what we do? Curious about Rights of Nature? Join us for a chat on our community engagement work and our recent Bog Cafe. We’ll be joined by special guests James Orr (Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland & Environmental Justice Network Ireland) and Declan Owens (Ecojustice Ireland). James and Declan will help us learn more about the Rights of Nature movement and the possibilities for Rights of Peatlands on the island of Ireland.

Join Friends of Ardee Bog for a conversation about our work protecting and preserving Ardee Bog, Ireland's most easterly raised bog. We will share how we work with local communities of people, plants, and peat — learning from the past to protect the future.

Curious about Rights of Nature? Special guests James Orr (Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland & Environmental Justice Network Ireland) and Declan Owens (Ecojustice Ireland) will join Friends of Ardee Bog to discuss the movement and how we might start to have conversations with our own community. Can we create a Declaration for the Rights of Peatlands on the island of Ireland?

Rights of Nature is a way of re-thinking our relationship with nature—from one of dominance to one of sharing, caring, respect and interdependency. It can also act as a catalyst to shift our thinking from an extractive economy towards a regenerative economy. The idea of nature having rights is not new. Nature has rights! What is new is how we can intervene using a rights of nature lens to protect nature and to recognise the intrinsic rights of ecosystems and species to evolve, flourish, and regenerate.

FAB — Friends of Ardee Bog — uses interactive art to create a safe space for confronting the reality of the climate crisis. Our work, although playful and full of joy, is an environmental call to action.

We are excited by the potential of Earth Rising to turn the museum inside out and to celebrate community, people, plants, peatlands & planet.

EARTH RISING is a vibrant new Eco Art Festival celebrating people, place and planet taking place across the IMMA Campus this October. Presenting over 70 contributors, artist commissions, a dynamic talks programme, Seed STUDIO, and showcasing a stunning built to disappear eco pavilion, alongside an eclectic live music line-up and food stalls, this promises to be an engaging and enjoyable free day out for everyone.

In the morning we will hold creative workshops at the BOG CAFE in the old church on John Street in Ardee. These are for local primary school students, but others are welcome to pop in and make climate strike signs and join us.

In the afternoon there will be a Bog Garden walking tour in Ardee Bog and students and others are welcome to join and hold a climate strike in the bog. We’ll confirm details!

Our pop-up BOG CAFE opens that day, so it will be a fun day. Join us!

We’ll share more info here closer to the date once we confirm details.

Click here for more info on the Global Climate Strike.

REASONS TO STRIKE

Many question why millions of children and adults across the world are taking the time to strike: don’t they have school, work or other responsibilities?

The answer is simple: We strike because we have no choice. We are fighting for our future and for our children’s future. We strike because there is still time to change, but time is of the essence. The sooner we act, the better our shared future will be.

ON SEPTEMBER 23RD, WE WILL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE REPARATIONS AND JUSTICE!

Join us for the Global Climate Strike as we demand policymakers and world leaders to prioritize #PeopleNotProfit! We demand that our Governments listen to MAPA voices and immediately work to provide Loss & Damage Finance to the communities most affected by the climate crisis.

Street Feast with Friends of Ardee Bog in Stormanstown Bog, Ardee, Co. Loouth, June 2022

Why Street Feast?

Let’s see what can be achieved when a small group of neighbours come together and try something special!

There are lots of good reasons to have a Street Feast. Most of all it’s a great excuse to eat good food, meet new people who live near you and have fun!

Street Feast is all about celebrating our communities. More life on the streets, more friends closer to home and a celebration of the community around us. There’s never been a better time to shine a light on the communities, networks and organisations that are holding everything together. While some of us are lucky enough to be a part of a strong community, there are many of us who find ourselves increasingly isolated. We’re all going to need to strengthen our communities to cope with the changes we’ll see in the near future. Street Feast gives us an excuse to get out there, share food and conversation, and help build stronger neighbourhoods.

Street Feast is also a great way to explore different ways your community can work together to make great things happen, you might discover new neighbours, new interests and new ways to improve your community together.

In 2021, Rights of Nature (RoN) was adopted for the first time in Ireland by Derry City & Strabane and Donegal district councils. Internationally, the RoN movement has been led primarily by indigenous groups, with rights being granted to rivers and other ecosystems across the world in Ecuador, New Zealand, India, and across Africa, and the USA.

We are facing a planetary emergency. Efforts are intensifying to include Ecocide as a crime against humanity and, as such, to be sanctioned by international criminal justice. This points to the need to enact crimes against humanity & nature. Rights of Nature is inevitable. The sooner Ireland adopts it, the better.

In May 2019 Ireland declared a Climate and Biological Emergency. Ireland’s Climate Action Plan states that “Peatlands represent 64% of our total soil organic carbon stock, representing the largest store of carbon in the Irish landscape.”[1] Yet Ireland’s raised bogs are on the verge of extinction.[2] We must protect all bogs on the island of Ireland. FAB’s ceremony is the first to call for Rights of Bogs.

Peatlands are Ireland's rainforest.[3] Ardee Bog is a raised bog and plays a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change by storing vast amounts of carbon. Irish peatlands store dramatically more carbon than agriculture or forestry. Peatlands like Ardee Bog are our most important long-term carbon sink. They sequester and store atmospheric carbon for thousands of years. The IPCC estimates that Ireland’s peatlands store 1085 mega tonnes of carbon. Our bogs need to be protected at all costs.

Ardee Bog took 7,000 - 10,000 years to form. The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) says “Ardee Bog is the very last and most easterly raised bog within County Louth and the Republic of Ireland.”[4]  The Louth Wetlands Identification survey designated Ardee Bog as National Grade B importance.[5]  Friends of Ardee Bog is a local environmental community group founded in 2019, dedicated to protecting and preserving the bog. Ardee Bog can’t speak, so we are her voice.

"We are calling on the Irish government to respect the urgency of the climate emergency and the importance of places like Ardee Bog as ecological wonders. It is our duty to protect these precious ecosystems. It is time for Ireland to embrace the Rights of Nature." - Katie Holten, Friends of Ardee Bog.

In order to protect both the natural ecosystems of Ireland’s precious peatlands and all the communities that rely on them, Friends of Ardee Bog advocates that Ardee Bog – and all bogs on the island of Ireland – be granted inalienable rights to be protected under law.

Celebrating World Curlew Day

CELEBRATE WORLD CURLEW DAY WITH US on Thursday APRIL 21st

On Thursday, April 21st, we will be in Ardee Library from 10.30am - 4pm.

To celebrate World Curlew Day we will be dressed as Curlews and sharing our love of these beautiful birds.

Come say hello! Ardee Library has graciously let us host a public celebration of Curlews, the challenges they face, and the ways these iconic birds interact with the imagination to enrich our lives. We will share some of the music, art, and ideas inspired by Curlews.

We look forward to sharing the beauty and peculiarity of Ardee Bog with everyone and to hearing other people’s stories and memories about the bog, questions about the Curlews, or just having a chat about what we do with Friends of Ardee Bog.

CURLEWS ARE ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION IN IRELAND. LEARN MORE HERE.

Our striking Curlew costumes were designed by Rachel Murphy for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We will be sharing a recipe on how to make your own Curlew costume - coming soon!

Curlews are one of the most iconic birds of the Irish countryside, but the Curlew Task Force has reported that there has been a 96% decline in numbers since the 1980s.[1] The Curlew is on the Red List of endangered birds and in danger of extinction in Ireland.[2] In 2021 only 34 breeding pairs were confirmed in Ireland.[3] Curlews are feeding and possibly nesting in Ardee Bog.[4]

We are running out of time. Curlews are on the brink of extinction in Ireland. We have a moral obligation to protect the habitat that supports Curlews. Imagine Ireland without the unique call of the Curlew?” - Anne Lennon, Friends of Ardee Bog, Curlew monitoring team leader
